Week of June 9 - June 13

We are reviewing a great deal of algebra...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...watch the video's I have chosen. Do the PRACTICE problems that go with them. The only way to study for a Math Exam is to PRACTICE similar problems.
The Math Final will be Friday JUNE 20th in the am.

June 2 - June 6

We begin FINAL Review this week!Students are to have a folder designated as their Math Final Review folder. I have encouraged them to recyle one from the bottom of their locker. We will be streamlining our review to include the kinds of questions most likely to be on the test. All work is to be kept in their folder.
This week we are reviewing combining like terms, solving 2 step equations, solving equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign, using algebra to find missing angles, and angle relationships. How much fun is that?
Our final is the first one up on June 20th in the am.
I have attached a link (Review Day #) which has video's that explains the concepts behind each of the concepts we are reviewing. Check it out for extra help!
THERE IS HOMEWORK EVERY DAY THIS WEEK!
Peace

Week of May 27 - May 30th

Math 7 Honors and Math8

We will be finishing up our work with quadratic equations and start a mini-unit on different ways to express the same mathematical idea. We will talk about tiling around the edge of a pool and all that different equations that can express the amount of tiles we will need.
Binders will be collected at the end of this week and early next week. Be sure to straighten them out. Next week we begin the review process for the final! The math final will be Friday June 20th.

Week of May 5- May 9th.

Not sure what happened last week but that post seems to have dissappeared!
Anyway....
We start a brand new and final Marking Period! We continue our work with Quadratic Equations, so far everyone thinks they are easy.

Week of April 21st- 25th

Imagine that you are prospecting diamonds in the barren outback of western Australia. You are told that you can claim any piece of land that can be surrounded by 60 meters of fencing. How should you arrange your fencing in order to enclose the maximum area possible?

In our new unit we are exploring Quadratic Relationships. We will be making sketches, and creating tables and graphs to demonstrate what a quadratic relationship is.

Binders were due last week and several people are yet to hand them in...
We have homework on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

There are only 2 weeks left in the marking period so make sure everything is in order.

Week of April 7th - April 10th

Spring is in the air...

We continue our work with compounded interest...Could a millionaire live off the interest of a million dollars in a saving acount? How can you pay for college? How much would $10 in Kodak stock purchased in 1940 be worth today? How much of a loan is actually interest? A lot of talk about MONEY!

We will also do some work around different ways to combine (add, subtract, multiply and divide) monomials and poylnomials. This will get us ready for our next Unit (after break) on QUADRATIC EQUATIONS! How smart are we?

BINDER CHECK: will be this week
Wednesday (Per 2 and 3: Math 7 Honors)
Thursday (Per 6, 7, and 9: Math 8)

QUIZ: Wednesday tOPICS: Writing an exponential equation from a table (growth and decay), Completing a Table when given an exponential equation, Calculating compound interest and creating an equation to describe it.

HOMEWORK:
Monday: Orgaize Binder and Complete EQ from class
Tuesday: Organize Binder and study for Quiz
Wendesday: Review Notes
Thursday: Homework

Week of March 28 - April 2

We are really getting to understand what exponential decay is this week. We will calculate how much soup someone would get if they took half of the pot, the next person took half of what was left, the next took half of that and so on? Would there be zero soup? We mastered writing an exponential equation to show the relationship between the person number and how many ounces of soup they would get. (s=21.5 times.5to the nth power)WOW! Don't we sound smart...
Later in the week we will be talking about compounded interest...Feel free to talk about how much interest is payed on a credit card or your mortgage!
No homework Monday and Thursday
Homework on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
There are A LOT of unorganized binders out there...GET THEM IN ORDER!

Week of March 24 - March 28th

Growing, Growing, Growing

We are continuing our discussion about how things can grow exponentially. We will also be talking about exponential decay...think March Madness, 64 teams become 32, 32 teams become the Sweet Sixteen, etc...Can you write an algebraic equation to express how many teams remain in any given round? We'll figure it out and let you know next week.

There will be homework each day this week and possibly a short quiz on Friday.

Week of March 17th - 21st

The Beginning of Marking Period 5

Our principal, Mrs Matthew, has proposed a challenge to our scholars. Any scholar who earns a GPA higher that her GPA will recieve a reward at the end of the 5th Marking Period. GET STUDYING!

Math 7 Honors and Math 8
We continue with our study of Exponential Growth and how to Calculate Growth Patterns. We've been trying to find a decent and fair reward for the peasant but he still hasn't gotten his reward.
Check out the video on how Bacteria grow exponentially! What else increases exponentially?

We have homework on Monday and Wednesday and a TEST on Wednesday.

Week of March 10 - 14th

Math 7 Honors and Math 8

The State Tests are all done and all of the scholars worked very hard. I am very proud of the students efforts! There was a great turn out for the review classes offered. Thank you to the parents who encouraged their child to attend and facilitated by dropping/picking them up. Also, the Star Cluster Homebase teachers have been pitching in by covering some basic math skills during homebase. THANK YOU!

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with 7 wifes,
Each of his wives had 7 sacks,
In each of the sacks were 7 cats,
Each of the cats had 7 kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, wives...how many were going to St. Ives?

Thus begins our new unit on Exponential Growth. It is a very interesting, yet tricky topic. We will be talking about "doubling" our money, compounded interest, bacteria and mold growth, and population increase/decrease. Though it is from the Connected Math series, we will not be using the book. It is imperative that all students keep their notes organized and in their binder.
There will be a short homework every night this week.

Week of February 11th -15th

For the next several weeks the 7th Grade Honors Classes and 8th Grade Classes will be doing seperate lessons. We had a QUIZ last friday and the students will get them back by Tuesday. They should be signed and brought back to class so I can check them for homework credit.

Math 7 Honors:
We have begun reviewing 7th Grade Math for the NYS Math test. It will also reinforce skills that we have learned in the 8th grade curriculum.

Monday: We entered the world of Real Numbers and identifying what kind of number something is. We also had to place rational and irratiional numbers on a number line. Play the Real Number game in the Math Links!!

Tuesday: A quick review of exponents and square roots. We will also be doing Scientific Notation which many kids struggle with.

Wednesday - Friday we will work on Statistics and Probability

The scholars will have homework each day...Remember, there is extra help every day during lunch period

MATH 8:

We will continue our work with using algebra to find missing angles. Students need to know congruent, vertical, corresponding, complimentary, supplementary, alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles and distributive property. We will be reviewing solving equations with variables on both side of the equation.
These will reinforce our algebra and geometry skills. Homework will be to finish each day essential question, there will be homework on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. There will also be a short quiz on Friday.

Stay Warm!
